On July 30, 2009, Daniel and Albert climbed Mount Whitney (14,496')as a
day hike. We hiked the Mount Whitney trail 22 miles round trip
with a 6,000 foot elevation gain. We left the Whitney Portal campground
at 3:00 am and reached the summit in 8 hours 10 minutes at 11:10 am.
We enjoyed the views and ate lunch on the summit for 50 minutes.
We arrived back at the trail head at 4:50 pm, completing the hike in 13
hours 50 minutes.
We enjoyed beautiful warm weather and cloudless skies.
Since we didn't have much time to acclimate, we hiked to Line Pine Lake
(9,960') the day before and camped at the Whitney Portal campground
(8,360') before setting off. We also drank lots and lots of water the
prior day.
We were making excellent time until somewhere on the 97 switchbacks
(around 13,000') when Daniel started getting a headache. The last 2
miles from Trail Crest along the John Muir trail to the summit proved
difficult for both of us. We were definitely running out of gas! After
the summit, though, we were able to destroy a whole different muscle
group for the way down.
All in all, a great experience!
Enjoy the pictures!
